Meanwhile, Thulsa Doom sets himself up as the head of a snake cult, and his followers begin seeing him as a god. The audience watches Conan become a man in all his glory. On one of these raids he killed Conan’s parents and took him captive. The main antagonist is named Thulsa Doom.Īs a young man, Thulsa Doom traveled the countryside raiding villages in search of the riddle of steel. That is certainly the case with Conan the Barbarian. He was and is a great character, but in large part, the monsters and villains he encounters often steal the show.

the movie itself was a simple one with simple themes, but to this day I consider it timeless. When we moved back stateside, there were many more distractions, and puberty led me to other interests, but I never lost my love for Conan the Barbarian. Unfortunately, the shipping schedule was not exactly predictable, but I would eventually get my fix. I used to get off the bus and head straight to the newsstand on days when I expected the Savage Sword of Conan to arrive. However, our newsstand carried many of the Marvel Conan titles. I searched the library and our little bookstore for Robert E. We put it on in the background when we were just hanging out. We had watched Excalibur, and the old animated Lord of the Rings movie, but we had no idea how much we would love Conan. Since we were already rabid Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) enthusiasts, we expected to like the movie. It was the day that our next door neighbor gave us a copy of Conan the Barbarian. There came a day, though, when we stopped watching that MTV video. My brother, my friends, and I watched that tape constantly. On the slowest setting, she could fit 6 hours of music videos on one tape. Eventually, we asked her to fill a tape with MTV. The games were long over, but we didn’t care. She would drop them in the mail, and we finally got to see our home team. The first thing we did was call my grandmother and have her tape the Steelers games. It was amazing – an opening to a whole new world. However, when I was about thirteen we got our first VCR player. The shows they played were about a year behind the States, so needless to say, we watched very little television.
I am not sure if it has changed, but back then we had one American television station. In the early 80’s my father was stationed at a small Army post in West Germany.
